Swimwear and beachwear trends change every year. Not so long ago there was a fashion for skimpy speedo style swimming trunks for men and near invisible micro-bikinis for women. Thankfully these fashion trends have changed.

Comfort and practicality, along with a nod towards retro fashions appear to be the influencing factors in beachwear trends for 2010. Board shortsare going to be very big this year, for both men and women. They’re great for any and all forms of beach activity, or inactivity. They’re also the best thing to wear when surfing.

Bikinis are still the favorite for many girls and women but the fashion is no longer for micro bikininis. You will see bikinis on the beaches this summer that could have come directly from the beaches of St Tropez in the fifties. Practical yet very stylish and much more modest than the skimpy costumes we’ve seen in recent years.

All in one costumes are making a comeback for women. This is great news for those who don’t like bikinis. Some of the designs that are making a resurgence originate from the forties and fifties. Think of Marilyn Monroe in those well known Life magazine photos from the forties and fifties.

A popular beach cover up for women will continue to be the practical and attractive sarong. And it looks like short sleeved sports shirts will be the popular choice for men.

As far as footwear goes its flip flops for everyone. For men, women, boys and girls, flip flops are the most practical form of beach footwear. Ideal for those pebbly beaches where it can be painful to walk down to the water. And the beauty of flip flops is that they are so cheap that you can afford to purchase several pairs.

One thing that is very out of fashion this year is a deep, dark brown tan. Increased awareness of the harmful effects of the sun’s radiation means that we will all be applying generous layers of high factor sun block.
