Ladies Tights – The History of Hosiery
by carnaval on May.20, 2009, under Fashion Shoes
Ladies tights are one fashion item that never actually goes out of fashion. Fashions change but we will always wear tights (or pantyhose as they’re known in the US) in some form or the other. Following the invention of nylon and the meteoric rise to fame of “nylons” in the 1960′s, ladies tights have become an essential wardrobe item for millions of women all over the world.
Nylon quickly became an affordable alternative material to the more expensive silk but nowadays tights and stockings are made from various affordable materials. During the 1950′s women experienced fine wrinkles in their stockings at the ankles but since then the use of Lycra in tights and stockings has prevented this problem! We’ve even taken things one step further and now wear shaping hosiery, there are whole ranges of body shaping tights available to tone and shape all our wobbly bits, like bums, tums and legs.
A common material for winter tights is wool, as it keeps you warm and cosy, and comes in lots of different colours. Wool tights are the perfect solution to keep warm over the winter while looking incredibly stylish at the same time.
When the starts to get warmer but you’re not ready to bare all just yet, opaque tights are just ideal. A long way from the days of sheer nylons, opaque tights have been a must-have for many women for the last few decades. They come in all sorts of colours and many different deniers.
The denier is measured by the thickness of the weave of the material that the tights are made from and the higher the denier the thicker the tights. Opaque tights are generally 40 denier or above, while sheer tights range from 5 denier to 30 denier usually, but often have re-inforced toes and tops.
Sheer tights also come in lots of different materials, as the denier is decided by the thickness of the tights and not determined by the material they’re made of.
Whichever tights you prefer – opaque, sheer, support, coloured, wet look, footless, or suspender – there is a vast array of choice available to buy now.
If you feel unsexy wearing tights there is always the option of hold ups or stockings. Hold ups and stockings are often worn by women for special occasions instead of tights as they do the same job but feel so much sexier. Just like ladies tights, stockings and hold ups are available in a wide range of colours, materials and deniers so there’s something suitable for every outfit.
Ladies tights are set to remain in the wardrobes of most women, as while our taste in colours and fashions may change, this staple item will remain in our hearts!
